CINE, CELLULOID, FLICK, FEATURE, NAME IT

Let’s talk movies today or better – let’s walk to the movies today, to Weimarstraat for the last bits of chilling images in De Nieuwe Regentes  or to the colorful Escamp neighborhood to check one of the art movies on the Theater and Filmhuis Dakota’s agenda.

HalloweenEvery Tuesday De Nieuwe Regentes Film Club is screening some of the good old moving pictures. As Halloween spirit is slowly going to sleep the movie with the same title is an appropriate choice.

John Carpenter’s Halloween is set in 1963. During Halloween night, a six year old boy kills his his sister using a huge knife. Fifteen years later, on a night before Halloween, he breaks out of the institution where he was placed, ready to kill again.

This film (which, I must admit is way to scary for me) changed the notion of horror movies, defining slasher genre stretching its influence to the today’s horror cinema.

Don’t forget that DNR Film Club films are only available for members. Pay € 10 and apply for the membership at the ticket box of the Nieuwe Regentes on the evening of your chosen film. First movie is for free, weekly screenings are € 5,00.

Theater and Filmhuis Dakota is the younger sibling of the Hague’s Filmhuis located in the city center. Dakota opened in 2011 and is placed in the multicultural neighborhood Escamp. Presence of different cultures reflects the program of this cultural hub, the movie choices, as well as special programs.

Elle sen va

November brings french drama Elle s’en va, the latest movie starring Catherine Deneuve. Facing a failed relationship and a struggling restaurant, Bettie (Deneuve) hits the road for a trip with her grandson. This movie can also be seen in Filmhuis.

Dakota is still showing Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine,  bringing brilliant, simply astonishing performance by Cate Blanchett. A must see. If nature is your thing (and it’s too cold to enjoy it), check De Nieuwe Wildernis, the movie that captures the circle of life in the unique landscape of Oostvaardersplassen, a nature reserve built on the surface that was once under the sea level.

I’m also looking forward to the announced remastered version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. That event requires a bunch of friends, lots of chocolate and mellow moods. Just what we need in November.
