Bloggers That Matter

A Matter of ACT, one of the competition programs of Movies That Matter festival, gathers ten special documentaries focused on the conduct of human rights defenders that are fighting injustice and oppression. The films are also showing challenges and dangers these people have to face in order to do their work. Human rights defenders coming from all over the world will participate in discussions with the audience following the screening.

The movie Forbidden voices by Barbara Miller portrays cyber feminists from Cuba, China and Iran that keep blogging about every day abuses of human rights in their countries despite constant opposition and threats from the authorities. They try to raise awareness about women’s rights in Iran avoiding Google’s intentional block of the word ‘woman’ in searches. They are fighting the ‘Great Firewall of China’, protected by 40,000 cyber cops. In attempt to avoid prison, they are forced to leave their countries.

These courageous women are on the TIME magazine’s list of the world’s most influential people. One of them,  that managed to leave Cuba for the first time in 10 years, will be in The Hague during Movies That Matter festival.

Movies that Matter festival, taking place from 21 to 27 March 2013, presents documentaries and feature films that are dealing with human rights, peace, freedom and sustainability. Apart from movies, the festival will host several debates, talk shows with international guests, daily music performances and photo exhibitions.
