Some things are AS GOOD AS the others – TodaysArt Part 2
Oh how much, so much I would love to see Marina Abramovic’s retrospective in the Hague. But one can’t have all so for now the same one has to be grateful to TodaysArt Festival for bringing on the face of the Earth the presentation of the installation ‘The Mutual Wave Machine’ coming from Marina Abramovic Institute’s Science Chamber. Boom, boom! Bombastic!
Suzanne Dikker, Matthias Oostrik, Peter Burr, Matthew Patterson Curry and Diederik Schoorl made this highly interactive neurofeedback installation that gives shape to the idea of ‘being on the same wavelength’ with another person through brainwave synchronization. I couldn’t say it better than the authors on TodaysArt website so I am humbly borrowing their words:””Enclosed by an intimate capsule and immersed in an audiovisual environment that responds to and reflects their shared brain activity, visitors can directly experience and manipulate their internal efforts to approach each other, or distance themselves from each other. “Media Lostness” gives a good view on Russian approach to media art. Part of this approach is absolute disregard of visual standards followed by focus on the artists that are creating new environments to transmit their artistic statements. The exhibition is curated by Karina Karaeva and Evgeny Umansky from The National Centre for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) in Moscow and it features works of Sergey Bratkov, Vladimir Logutov, Vladimir Seleznev. Connected to Media Lostness is the exhibition The ‘Past Imperfect’ that gives an insight in to what it’s like to experience past, present and future in the modern Russia. Travel through Soviet reality, “shock reforms”, period of “stabilization” and (post-)crisis reality. Is history repeating? The last event in this series that caught my attention is ‘Sonata for Convolution and Feedback’, an audio-visual sonata, performed live on the custom-build instrument. The author of this intriguing piece is Nenad Popov, media anarchist exploring the space between art and plain research. Think live cinema, sound and film installations, film installations, algorithms, alleged bar fights and teaching. Anarchy, I say! 28 September – 20:00 – 20:30
